GREEN VISION
MORE THAN A VISION OR ASPIRING HOPE, GREEN BUILDING PRACTICES AND ECO-FRIENDLY INTERIORS ARE IN FULL FORCE.

COLLEEN DUFFY

Sharing the wealth of knowledge and resources that come into play, Window Fashions highlights three green-hot venues that support good green design—the 2008 Green Builder® Orlando Vision House, the Better Homes and Gardens Living Green Tour, and the Green Pavilion by TODL, which was hosted at the 2008 International Window Coverings EXPO this past March. These events offer the opportunity to fully experience how accessible and gorgeous being green can be in all homes.

GREEN PAVILION BY TODL
The International Window Coverings EXPO hosted its first-ever Green Pavilion by Trade Only Design Library (TODL) this past March in Atlanta, GA. An array of green design products covered the popular show floor venue with window treatments, flooring, wall coverings, furnishings, and accessories.

The Pavilion exceeded its intention of educating and arming designers with the tools to integrate green-design products into their clients’ décor. TODL’s experts were on hand for questions; informative presentations offered advice; and HGTV Canada’s Makeover Wish star Ami McKay launched her sustainable furnishings collection, Pure. Designers enjoyed the full-fledged introduction of green design products and gained understanding and inspiration to help their clients make positive changes in their homes and lives.

BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS LIVING GREEN TOUR

Hitting the road for a 15-city, seven-month US tour to spread the green-living message, the bio-diesel–fueled Tour will feature a 2,500-square-foot Better Homes and Gardens “Living Green Home”. The eco-friendly room vignettes are outfitted with green products, materials, and appliances to promote resourcefulness, energy efficiency, and everyday environmental practices to help consumers save money, live healthier, and conserve natural resources.

The Living Green Tour is presented by Better Homes and Gardens magazine and Green Works™, a new line of natural cleaners that are made with plant-based ingredients and work as well as conventional cleaners.

2008 GREEN BUILDER ORLANDO VISION HOUSE
Sponsored by Green Builder magazine, the Green Builder Vision House Series is a group of demonstration projects around the country that showcase the National Association of Home Builders’ Model Green Building Guidelines. The home placed first in the Parade of Homes and garnered seven prestigious awards including the Florida Green Building Coalition, Florida Home Builders Association, Energy Star, and Water Star.

Located on Lake Apopka, FL, just outside of Orlando, the 2008 Green Builder® Orlando Vision House offers beautiful views. One of the Green Builder priorities included the protection of the lake from pollution. The house also conserves water with low-flow and efficient fixtures. Additionally, storm water run-off is collected and landscaping with native, drought-resistant plant species minimizes irrigation.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT STRUCTURE
Incorporating features to take advantage of the local climate, the architect’s design included a Fischer SIPS wall system, Lennox HVAC systems, Spray Foam insulation, hurricane-proof Windoor patio doors, and BetterBilt windows—all which cumulatively create an energy-efficient shell. Engineered wood products from Huber for the roof system and the floor decking were utilized for the exterior, while engineered wood studs and trusses framed the interior of the home.

WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE COUNTS
Beyond a whole-house air filtration, the interior décor, designed by EcoDecor of North Palm Beach, FL, minimizes off-gassing with low- or no-VOC finishes, adhesives, fabrics, flooring, and other materials. Organic fabrics, furnishings by members of the Sustainable Furniture Council, natural wall treatments, and naturally dyed organic rugs were only part of the star cast in this home’s interior design.

Vision House interior designer Bernadette Upton, EcoDecor, is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional with the US Green Building Council (USGBC), a program that sets standards for the sustainable building and design industry. She is also a member and Home Designator of the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) and a member of the National Environmental Health Association. Installer Daniel R. Giordano, ASID partner, DRG Interior Installations, and EcoDecor, shares the sustainable vision that contributed to the home’s award-winning décor. WF
